From Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law to Louisiana’s Right to Bear Arms Amendment, states are passing groundbreaking gun rights laws. In instances where local governments (city, county, etc.) have tried to pass gun ordinances, states like Florida, and Indiana, and Louisiana have passed state preemption laws that ban all local gun-grabbing ordinances. More than eight states have passed Firearms Freedom Acts, which state that all guns and ammo manufactured, sold, and used within a single state are not subject to federal gun laws enacted based on the Interstate Commerce Clause. As a response to mass school shootings, states have advanced various types of School Protection Acts to place armed teachers, administrators, and guards in public schools to protect children.

Finally, in 2013, more than a dozen states advanced bills to nullify and criminalize federal gun control enforcement using variations of Wyoming’s Firearm Protection Act. (See growing list of states pursuing Firearms Protection Acts.) This powerful legislation typically provides that any attempt to enforce federal gun control inside a state is a felony punishable by up to five years imprisonment and a fine of $5,000.
