Louisiana Science Education Act frees educators to critique evolutionary theory

Bill: SB733/ACT 473 (text)

Sponsored by Sen. Nevers and signed into law by Gov. Bobby Jindal, SB733/ACT 473 (“The Louisiana Science Education Act”) gives public school teachers the option to introduce supplemental materials “to help students understand, analyze, critique, and review in an objective manner the scientific strengths and scientific weaknesses of existing scientific theories.” Examples include critiques of biological evolution, chemical origins of life, global warming, and human cloning. This academic freedom law effectively allows teachers to introduce creation science and intelligent design theory (ID) as alternatives to prevailing theories on evolution.
