Mississippi among first U.S. states with constitutional amendment banning gay marriage

Sponsored by Reps. Barnet, Fillingane, et al, and signed into law by Gov. Barbour, HCR56 is a legislatively referred ballot initiative from 2004 that allowed voters of Mississippi to amend the Mississippi Constitution to define marriage as only between one man and one woman. Amendment 1, which passed by overwhelming margins, made Mississippi one of eleven states to ban same-sex marriage in 2004.
